Mathesar

Mathesar is an open source, spreadsheet-like web UI for your PostgreSQL data — a self-hosted Airtable and Microsoft Access alternative that lets non-technical users view, edit, and query real Postgres tables without writing SQL.

What is Mathesar?

Mathesar is an open source web application that puts a spreadsheet-like interface on top of a PostgreSQL database. It lets people view, edit, and query real Postgres tables through a familiar grid — no SQL required — while everything stays as standard relational data in your own database.

What is Mathesar best for?

Teams that already run PostgreSQL and want non-technical colleagues to work with the data directly. It suits internal admin tools, inventory and asset tracking, grant or customer-support records, and any case where you’d otherwise dump data into a spreadsheet but need it to stay in a real, constrained database.

What can Mathesar do?

  • Browse and edit Postgres tables in a spreadsheet-style grid, including creating and deleting records
  • Filter, sort, and group rows for quick data slicing
  • Build queries visually with the Data Explorer — joins and calculations without writing SQL
  • Create shareable forms that save submissions straight into tables
  • Import and export data (CSV and more) to move records in and out
  • Enforce foreign keys, custom types (email, URL), and constraints at the database level
  • Manage permissions using native PostgreSQL roles rather than a separate access layer

Where does Mathesar fall short?

  • Postgres only. Mathesar works exclusively with PostgreSQL — there’s no MySQL, SQLite, or SQL Server support, so it’s a non-starter if your data lives elsewhere.
  • It’s a data UI, not an app platform. Unlike Retool or Airtable’s automations, Mathesar has no workflow automations, scripting, or rich field types like file attachments — it manages relational data, it doesn’t build multi-screen apps.
  • Public beta. As of the 0.x releases it’s stable enough for production per the project, but it hasn’t hit a 1.0, so expect some rough edges and evolving features.

Is Mathesar free?

Yes — Mathesar is fully free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license, built by the nonprofit Mathesar Foundation, and you can self-host it at no cost on your own infrastructure. A managed Mathesar Cloud option exists in early beta for teams that would rather not run it themselves.

What does Mathesar replace?

Mathesar is a self-hosted alternative to Airtable, Microsoft Access, and Retool. It gives business users a friendly grid over shared data like those tools do, but the data lives in your own PostgreSQL database instead of a proprietary cloud or a Windows-only desktop file. If you want richer no-code databases with more built-in field types and automations, Baserow, NocoDB, and Teable are closer Airtable clones.

FAQ

Is Mathesar open source? Yes. Mathesar is released under the GPL-3.0 license and maintained by the Mathesar Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — the full source is public on GitHub.

Can I self-host Mathesar for free? Yes. Self-hosting is free; you install it with Docker on top of a PostgreSQL database and only pay for your own server. Mathesar Cloud is a separate managed option.

Is Mathesar a good Airtable alternative? For teams already on Postgres, yes — it keeps data in a real relational database with proper constraints. If you want file attachments, automations, and a fully self-contained app builder, Baserow or NocoDB map more directly to Airtable.

What do I need to run Mathesar? A server with Docker and a PostgreSQL database. Mathesar’s backend is Python/Django with a Svelte frontend, but you don’t touch that to run it — the Docker deployment handles it.
